Key Stage One (Years 1 and 2)
Key Stage One provides a curriculum for our pupils aged between five and seven years old. All infant schools are required to teach a ‘broad and balanced’ curriculum which includes ten national curriculum subjects and religious education.
English
Mathematics
Science
Computing
Design and technology
History
Geography
Art
Music
Physical Education
Religious Education
PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education)
We teach these subjects through a cross curricular approach, where possible. English (including phonics and grammar) and Maths are taught separately at times depending on the subject.
Cross curricular teaching is a teacher’s approach to individual and classroom learning. It is a powerful way to generate creative thinking, enabling class teachers to progress learning at all levels and create more opportunities for a ‘broad and balanced curriculum’. It can enhance children’s creativity and motivation. Pupils learn through themes. These ensure that their learning is real to them and engages them from the beginning. Pupils learn through discovery, reasoning and thought and we aim to give them a wide variety of experiences so that they are learning to formulate their own ideas, observations and independence.
