Curriculum Intent at Hatfield Peverel Infant School
Parents who have been the main influence on their child’s development before coming to Hatfield Peverel Infant School will continue to have a significant influence in partnership with the school. When children enter the school, they will already have gained a lot of knowledge and experience.
Our school's curriculum aims to provide them with challenging, creative and appropriate opportunities for further intellectual, aesthetic, physical, personal, social, moral and spiritual growth. We intend for our children to become resilient, independent and curious with a love for learning.
Our Curriculum aims to deepen children’s experiences by addressing all areas of learning through well-planned and imaginative activities through half-termly or termly topics of interest.
Children in the Reception Year continue to work towards Early Learning Goals which prepare them for the National Curriculum programmes that begin as they move into Year One and then Year Two.
We have developed our curriculum with independence, creativity; challenge and mastery in mind. Each of our subject areas have their own individual intent which together form a whole approach to develop breadth, inquiry and lifelong skills and knowledge.
Our Approach to Phonics
Our Approach to Reading
Phonics is taught through a systematic and structured phonics programme. We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised to plan and provide daily engaging phonics lessons. Phonics teaching starts in Reception and follows a specific sequence that allows our pupils to build on their previous phonic knowledge and master specific phonic strategies as they move through school. Phonics is taught daily in Reception and Year One and there is a review session each Friday. In Year Two, phonics lessons are taught daily to children where appropriate.

Swimming
We are delighted to be able to provide swimming lessons by a qualified instructor during the second half of the summer term to every child in the school. This is because St Andrew's Junior School have an outdoor swimming pool on their site and they generously let us share the facility with them. We do ask for parental contributions to enable us to provide this excellent life skill tuition. Please have a look at our Swimming Information Leaflet to find out more about swimming at our school.
Class reading areas have books of all genres and levels of phonetically decodable and non-decodable reading books and schemes to meet all needs. The books are a mixture of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Reading books include Oxford Reading Tree, Songbirds, Dandelion Readers, Rising Stars and Collins Big Cat.
The ‘reading practice’ book
We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised to plan and provide daily engaging phonics lessons. Little Wandle is linked to Collins Big Cat books therefore the children primarily follow this scheme throughout. Once a week, a reading practice book will be allocated via Collins Big Cat subscription. This book will be closely matched to your child’s reading level and Little Wandle assessments.
The ‘sharing’ book
Children will also bring home a coloured sticker levelled book. These books are closely matched to the phonics phase that they are working within, but they will not necessarily be fully decodable as their allocated reading practice book is. It is intended you read this book ‘with’ your child.
The ‘star’ books
‘Star’ books are non-levelled and offer a wealth of opportunities for developing vocabulary, enjoying the story, and using imagination. The star book is for an adult to read ‘to’ a child.

Additional Events for Specific Talents
From time to time there are special events put on by a collaboration of the schools in the Witham area. This is part of our joint work for gifted and talented children providing extension or challenging activities. To date there have been a range of events over the years:
- Sporting competitions and experience days
- Infant District Sports
- The Annual Infant Music Festival
These events are usually 'one offs' organised by individual schools who then invite other schools to select a few pupils to attend. For a child to be selected, teachers of the relevant age group are asked to recommend children who have shown particular talent in that area of the curriculum during the year. In the case of sports events, heats are held to aid the selection process in which all the children participate. If we host an event we are obviously able to include more children than we could otherwise. We will always write to parents of the children selected for permission to include them if a) transport off site is involved or b) the event is out of school hours. Otherwise children will take part in school in normal school hours.
